The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past sequel

photo link_to_the_past_2_3ds0_cinema_9600_zpsf990fec5.jpgNintendo will release a new Legend of Zelda game for Nintendo 3DS based on the world of A Link to the Past later this year, the company announced today. A sequel to the Super NES original, the game will feature new mechanics, including the ability for Link to become a 2D drawing and move along walls.

Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America, says the 3DS sequel will "reinvigorate the flat 2D world of A Link to the Past with a sense of height and volume" by utilizing the stereoscopic 3D capabilities of the Nintendo 3DS. The game, which does not have a final title in North America, will feature "an original storyline and all new dungeons."

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past 2, as the game is titled in Japan, will be released sometime this holiday in North America and next year in Japan.

A video of the game will be available to download from the Nintendo 3DS eShop later today.

Update: Nintendo confirmed that the new Zelda game set in the world of A Link to the Past is being developed by series producer Eiji Aonuma and his team at Nintendo EAD.
